About me

Background

After my studies in Biomedical Engineering (BSc & MSc at the Politecnico di Milano, Italy), I received my Ph.D. in Bioinformatics in 2017 from the University Medical Center Mainz, in Germany, under the supervision of Prof. Harald Binder.

Being awarded a Virchow Felloship from the Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis, I was a Postdoctoral Fellow under the joint supervision of Prof. Wolfram Ruf and Prof. Miguel Andrade, and I grew fond of platelets and their transcriptome.

My research interests involve the development of methods and software for interactive and reproducible research, bringing together the fields of bioinformatics, statistics, genomics, and biology. Sitting at the interface of many disciplines, with a focus on Immunology and cancer research (e.g. within the SFB1292), I like to contribute with tools that deliver comprehensive and comprehensible omics data analysis. This encompasses data visualization and exploration, advanced statistical modeling, and interpretation and contextualization, most often realized with the R programming language.

Since September 2021 I am the Head of the Bioinformatics Group at the Institute of Medical Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics (University Medical Center Mainz).
I also serve as the Joint Head of the Core Facility Bioinformatics - BIUM(MZ), supporting biomedical reasearch with molecular data and providing an interface for bioinformatics expertise.

In the time when I am not sitting behind a computer screen, you can mostly find me with my three kids, listening to music, cooking, or in a combination of the items above.

Open positions

Research Assistants/Hiwi. We have often openings for dedicated students, with backgrounds in Bioinformatics, Biostatitics, or Life Sciences, who are interested in quantitative disciplines and in gaining research experience (e.g. before starting a PhD). Email me directly if this describes you well!

PhD Students. There are no open positions at the moment. However, funding opportunities can be available, depending on the pending status of research proposals - Feel free to email me to enquire about the status!

Postdoctoral fellows. There are no open positions at the moment. However, strong candidates are encouraged to email me directly and discuss an application for funding with the University Medical Center and/or other funding bodies.
